Hydraulic Accumulator Calculator — Dedicated to Liquid Fluid-Power Systems:
This calculator is designed specifically for gas-loaded hydraulic accumulators (bladder and piston types) in liquid fluid-power systems. It is not intended for steam-pressure vessels, boiler thermal storage, or steam accumulators, which require two-phase water/vapor saturation models.

Preliminary Sizing Estimate (Ideal Gas)
⚠️ Elevated Pressure Notice (> 200 bar / ~3,000 psi):
Operating pressure p₂ exceeds 200 bar. At elevated pressures, real nitrogen gas compressibility deviates significantly from the ideal gas model (Z > 1). A real-gas correction factor (Ci for isothermal / Ca for adiabatic) must be applied. Contact Schwerll engineering for verified real-gas sizing.
100Liters
Preliminary Catalog Candidate Nominal Size (V0)
Calculated Theoretical Gas Vol (V₀):92.0 L (Ideal Gas)
• Catalog Mapping:Automated standard selection range (≤ 800 L, ≤ 690 bar). Custom high-pressure piston configurations up to 2,000 bar (200 MPa) and 1,500 L single vessels require engineering review.
⚠️ Engineering Notice & Disclaimer: This calculator provides preliminary ideal-gas sizing estimates for initial planning purposes. Final accumulator selection must verify manufacturer design limits, real-gas compressibility factors (Ci / Ca above ~200 bar), operating temperature range (Tmin / Tmax), cycle dynamics, and applicable pressure-vessel certifications (PED / ASME).
The following table defines the thermodynamic parameters required to size gas-loaded hydraulic accumulators. User inputs are entered in gauge pressure (bar g). The calculation engine converts them internally to absolute pressure using 1.0 bar as the nominal atmospheric-pressure approximation (Pabs = Pgauge + 1.0 bar) to satisfy thermodynamic gas laws.

n
Polytropic Gas Exponent
—

Hydraulic Accumulator Sizing Formula & Thermodynamic Principles
Gas-loaded hydraulic accumulators store potential energy through the compression and expansion of dry nitrogen gas. The thermodynamic transformation follows the polytropic gas law:
Isothermal Expansion (n = 1.00): Slow charge and discharge processes where sufficient thermal equilibrium with the environment is maintained throughout the cycle.
Adiabatic Expansion (n = 1.40): Rapid discharge or emergency cycles where heat exchange across the accumulator vessel wall is negligible during fluid release.
Polytropic Cycles (1.01 < n < 1.39): Realistic intermediate industrial operations where partial heat transfer occurs.
This online tool computes an ideal/polytropic preliminary sizing estimate. At pressures exceeding approximately 200 bar (~3,000 psi), real nitrogen molecules experience intermolecular repulsion, causing the real-gas compressibility factor (Z) to rise above 1.0. Consequently, real nitrogen requires a larger physical volume than predicted by the ideal gas law. A real-gas correction factor (Ci for isothermal / Ca for adiabatic) must be applied for final engineering procurement. Do not treat preliminary ideal calculations as certified manufacturer sizing.
Hydraulic Accumulator Sizing Example (Worked Engineering Calculation)
To illustrate the ideal gas sizing calculation without empirical safety multipliers, consider an industrial auxiliary energy storage duty:
Input Parameters:
Maximum system operating pressure (p2): 210 bar g (p2,abs = 211.0 bar abs)
Minimum actuator operating pressure (p1): 160 bar g (p1,abs = 161.0 bar abs)
Required fluid delivery (ΔV): 15 Liters
Operating fluid temperature (T): 45°C (Tabs = 318.15 K)
Application duty: Energy Storage (Precharge rule: 0.90 × p1)
Gas expansion process: Adiabatic (n = 1.40)
Step-by-Step Mathematical Calculation:
Estimated Operating Precharge:p0 = 0.90 × p1 = 0.90 × 160 = 144.0 bar g (p0,abs = 145.0 bar abs).
Cold-Filling Reference Precharge at 20°C: Thermal factor kT = (45 + 273.15) / (20 + 273.15) = 318.15 / 293.15 = 1.0853. Reference filling pressure p0,ref,abs = 145.0 / 1.0853 = 133.6 bar abs → p0,ref = 132.6 bar g.
2. Preliminary Catalog Candidate: 100 Liter standard commercial size (e.g. Schwerll BAKH Large Bladder or HAK Piston Accumulator, Class 350 bar).
3. Engineering-Verified Selection: Because p2 = 210 bar exceeds 200 bar, a certified real-gas adiabatic correction factor (Ca) must be verified prior to manufacturing release.
Recommended Hydraulic Accumulator Series & Field Support
The calculator’s automated sizing engine matches catalog candidates within standard commercial ranges (up to 800 Liters and 690 bar). For severe operating pressures (above 690 bar, up to 200 MPa / 2,000 bar) or large volume reserves (single vessels up to 1,500 Liters, or multi-vessel accumulator battery racks), SCHWERLL provides custom-engineered piston accumulator configurations subject to project-specific engineering review:
Standard Bladder Accumulators
Optimized for fast dynamic response, high-frequency pulsation damping, and rapid fluid release up to 400 bar. Seamless forged shell with NBR, FKM, or ECO elastomers.
Engineered for high usable volume reserves (up to 800 L standard, 1,500 L custom) and severe pressures up to 690 bar standard, 2,000 bar custom. Honed cylinder bore with multi-compound dynamic seals.
Hydraulic accumulator nominal gas volume (V₀) is calculated from the polytropic expansion equation V₀ = ΔV / [ (P₀,abs / P₁,abs)^(1/n) – (P₀,abs / P₂,abs)^(1/n) ], using absolute pressures (P_abs = P_gauge + 1.0 bar nominal atmospheric approximation) and the expansion exponent n corresponding to process heat transfer rate.
P₀ is the nitrogen gas precharge pressure when no hydraulic fluid is present; P₁ is the minimum operating pressure required to move your actuators; and P₂ is the maximum system pressure when the accumulator is fully charged with fluid. The pressure relationship must always satisfy P₂ > P₁ > P₀.
For energy storage, P₀ is typically set to 0.90 × P₁ as a manufacturer starting recommendation. For pump pulsation dampening, P₀ is sized within 0.60–0.80 × Pₘ (mean line pressure), with 0.70 × Pₘ commonly selected as an adjustable preliminary default. For hydraulic shock and surge suppression, P₀ is sized within 0.60–0.90 × Pₘ, with 0.65 × Pₘ commonly selected. Final precharge must be verified against pump dynamics and fluid acoustics.
Gas expansion thermodynamics (pVⁿ = constant) strictly require absolute pressure. User inputs are entered in standard gauge pressure (bar g), which the calculation engine converts to absolute pressure internally using 1.0 bar as the nominal atmospheric approximation (P_abs = P_gauge + 1.0 bar).
Select n = 1.00 (isothermal) for slow cycles with sufficient heat dissipation to maintain thermal equilibrium with the environment. Select n = 1.40 (adiabatic) for rapid discharge cycles or line shock where heat transfer across vessel walls is negligible. Select intermediate polytropic values (n = 1.20–1.30) for continuous pump ripple dampening.
No. This tool is engineered exclusively for gas-loaded hydraulic accumulators (bladder and piston types) in liquid fluid-power circuits. Steam accumulators operate on two-phase water-steam saturation equilibrium and require latent heat capacity calculations, which are outside the thermodynamic model of this tool.
